Fantastic Internet Freebies

I love free stuff don’t you. Years ago the internet was a bundle of free things, up for grabs for anyone who wanted it.  That was then, and this is now. Things change, but in fact, not everything changes for the worse!

Granted, there isn’t quite so much cool free stuff on the net as there used to be back in the “day”. That is to say back in the dot com boom, when freebies were plentiful and sites just gave it away to drag in the traffic. Everybody loves getting something for nothing. But you can still find a lot of free things on the internet, trial offers, great software and even cents off coupons to print out.

Now there are still a whole bundle of free things on the web, but  the wealth of free things  today have to be carefully screened for such ridiculous additions as obtrusive advertising, viral goodies and other such nasties, but with the right choosing and a bit of investigation, you can still find some sweet free deals worth snatching up.

That is particularly true of Open Source Software, the king of software so far as we’re concerned, which doesn’t usually add intrusive additions and intractable trackers, but the same holds true of some other types as well.

A few of the nicer things we’ve found on  the web freebie circuit:

  • JConnect:No Fax machine? NO problem. JConnect has been offering free fax services since.. well for a lot of years actually. While you can’t send outbound faxes without buying the premier account, the free account does let you accept incoming fax messages and sends them to you as email attachments. Granted you can’t take advantage of it by getting a hundred a day or you’re going to get a “lower your use” email, but I haven’t had any issues and there are days when I get four or five from JConnect. Sign up for a free incoming fax service here.
  • Freeservers : The name pretty much says it all. Want to put up a small web site, and don’t want to pay for hosting? Freeservers gives you a sweet deal. For nothing a month, you can put up your persona, or even a business web site, get tools to help you do it if you’re not sure how, and all for the low low price of…  nothing. Granted there are a couple of ads on your web space, but chances are, if you’re like the rest of us, and adsense happy, there would have been anyway. If you decide to go the paid hosting route, they offer that too, for as little as 4 USD a month.  I used freeservers back in the internet heyday. These folks too have been around well over ten years, so they probably aren’ t going anywhere and its fairly safe to use the service without waiting for the crash. Freeservers Free hosting Site
  • The Gimp: I am continuously amazed at how many people have never heard of the GIMP. Free software that rivals even Adobe Photo Shop© for its interface and features, GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program) has been around for years. Written for UNIX, it runs in any operating system, or very nearly any, including Windows, Mac and Unix, is completely free and can give you simple photo editing, professional quality editing or image authoring capacity in an instant, without the need to pay hundreds of dollars to get it. If you’ve never used GIMP you are going to be pleasantly shocked at what it can do for you and the tutorials available on the web, even for beginners, will have you up and running even in a heartbeat even if you’ve never worked with graphics in your life. Check it out here!
  • Windows Defender: Hey what can I say, its a decent program and its free. Now Windows © doesn’t give away much as a rule, so when you find something that’s really good and isn’t making you pay through the nose for it, grab it while you can. Windows defender is a little utility that MS makes available to you if you use XP or Vista, and it keeps you from some of those nasty spyware and adware programs that can make your online life miserable. Defender is quite good as protection goes and we’d certainly recommend that you take a hard look at it. Vista has it supplied but it may be turned off, so take a look at that and keep it running.
  • Free Email Greeting Cards From Hallmark, once of the best greeting cards companies going, you can send some of those cool free greeting cards through email, or even print some out if you like to mail. Not a vast selection but still very cool.
  • Free Public Domain Photos: If you’re a web developer or just like cool photos of neat places, there are a vast array here that you can use for your projects, and not have to worry about those pesky copyright issues.
  • Free Recipes
  • The internet is fairly rife with recipes for just about anything at all. Among the sites that you should take a peek at are Recipes 4 Us an international and British cookery site, and Recipes For Less a recipe site that stresses good cooking for crowds for low cost, and features some special diet recipes as well.

  • Kids Free Games Featuring the adventures of riddle bug, and free coloring pages, the educational games and other activities are teacher developed.
