First things first. Many of us use a password on our computers. I personally don’t but for the most part, the world wants their “stuff” secure.
If you add a password, particularly in Windows XP, which is what a vast portion of us are using today, and you forgot your windows password, unless you’ve taken the time to create a password reset disk, you’re pretty much done for. The only real way to get back into your computer is to reinstall Windows XP and starting over unless you’ve created a password reset disk to help you change it.
Most of us don’t take the time, but its a little thing that can save a big headache.
To create a Wndows Password Reset Disk,
- Log on as your computers administrator
- Go to Start and then Control Panel
- Click the “User Accounts”
- Choose the account name you want to make theĀ password reset disk for
- Go to “Related Tasks” and choose Prevent a lost password
- When you get the “Welcome to the Forgotten Password Wizard, choose “next”.
- Follow the on screen directions
You need an almost unheard of tool for this one. A floppy drive, which many computers no longer come with. If you don’t have one, consider a USB floppy so you can plug it in if you need it.

Many thanks for the tip.
Password reset disk is good but it’s only suitable for home desktops.
If you are in big enterprise environment – the best way to go is password self service solutions.
From my personal experience for such purposes I can recommend desktop authority password self service.
This solution can integrate “Forgot your password” button to any login screen and after answering to several challenge question every user can reset his password without extra calls to helpdesk department.

Forgot Your Windows Password?
A lot of people think that after having lost their Windows admin password, they absolutely have to reinstall their OS. Let me tell you something: They are wrong! Here I’m posting a few methods / utilities which can be used to recover Windows password:
1st Method:
The first thing which you check if you forget login password. When we install Windows, it automatically creates an account “Administrator” and sets its password to blank. So if you have forget your user account password then try this:
Start system and when you see Windows Welcome screen / Login screen, press ++
keys twice and it’ll show Classic Login box. Now type “Administrator” (without quotes) in Username and leave Password field blank. Now press Enter and you should be able to log in Windows. Now you can reset your account password from “Control Panel -> User Accounts”.
Same thing can be done using Safe Mode. In Safe Mode Windows will show this in-built Administrator account in Login screen.
2th Method:
There are many 3rd party utilities which claim to recover forgotten Windows password:
